Call it escapism, clutching at straws in times of need, or a genuine belief in better things to come, but the idea of the Messiah has been a central concept not only of Judaism, but also Christianity and Islam, for many a year. It should be noted, mind you, that the latter two religions hold that the next time the Messiah emerges will be a follow-up event to the original apparition.
