He embraced counterinsurgency rather than liberation politics; by identifying sovereignty with disarming non-state actors, rather than freedom from settler-colonialism - and he echoed Zionist claims by situating the root cause of armed resistance in Hezbollah’s religious ideology, rather than Israeli occupation.
