We all know the best novels don’t dispense direct advice, but instead subtly reveal to us the joyous and tragic complexities of being alive. That doesn’t mean there aren’t fictional characters throughout literature whose counsel is worth listening to. As well as many more whose dubious “wisdom”, while best steered well clear of, nonetheless makes for queasy literary entertainment.
