On the occasion of Mother’s Day celebrated just yesterday, in Sri Lanka, the exodus of professional women from the workforce needs to be scrutinised more closely. Women leaving the workforce at the onset of caregiving is rarely a simple lifestyle choice; rather, it is the result of a crushing “double burden” – the structural expectation that women must manage the lion’s share of unpaid domestic labour while simultaneously pursuing a career.
