Trade unions in Sri Lanka are active, legally recognised bodies with over 1,500 registered entities, primarily governed by the Trade Union Ordinance of 1935. Almost all of them are focused on the welfare of their membership. Some trade unions have only their office bearers and no members! Some of them last for a few years and then vanish into thin air!
