In August 1973, four hostages were taken during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. Over the course of six days, something psychiatrists and criminologists would later find extraordinary began to happen: the captives developed an emotional bond with their captors. They sympathized with them, defended them, and in some cases actively resisted rescue.
