Born in 1936 in the village of Palatuwa, Matara, Sirisumana Godage was the sixth child in a family of nine siblings. He received his primary education at Palatuwa Gunaratana Maha Vidyalaya. Due to the economic hardships faced by his family, he moved to Kalutara at the age of 15 and began his professional journey as a book binder.
