At 1.23 a.m. on April 26, 1986, a massive explosion ripped through Reactor Number Four at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Soviet Union, in an area that now belongs to Ukraine. A safety test triggered the worst nuclear accident in history, releasing 400 times more radiation into the atmosphere than the Hiroshima bomb of August 1945.
