There are moments in international affairs when the conduct of smaller states acquires significance beyond their military and economic power. The efforts now under way to widen the present ceasefire understandings into a more lasting Middle East settlement deserve Sri Lanka’s strongest possible support. Pakistan’s role in helping to open channels between the United States and Iran has created an important diplomatic opportunity.
