Perhaps you have seen it before: a serene Bikkhu, hand resting in a bowl, rendered in soft pastel tones. The print often hangs slightly off-centre at the family shrine in an ancestral home. That familiar image is Sivali Maha Thera painted by Master M. Sarlis. Today it is remembered as a devotional icon, reproduced endlessly across the island.
