Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe stated that New Year customs and traditions – a major stream of the great Sinhala culture – have been safely preserved and maintained for thousands of years centered around the Buddhist temple, and that Buddhist monks have played a historical role in this regard.
