According to Deputy Tourism Minister Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, the position of Member of Parliament (MP) cannot be considered as a profession that attracts a pension. Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the Parliament Pensions (Repeal) Bill, Prof. Ranasinghe said; “We have received a mandate from the people. By abolishing pensions the mandate will be strengthened again.”
