Growing up in the Sri Lanka of the mid-30s onward meant that my school friends and I remained cocooned from the blows outside our daily orbit. What would be considered a shattering blow to us was if a bicycle tyre unexpectedly needed a repair. Until the repair was done, the cycle was not usable.
