The impasse over the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20 percent of the world’s oil flows, has triggered a debate over our over-reliance on fossil fuels. We consume around 100 million barrels of oil and gas per day for transport, power generation, cooking and many other tasks. The world will indeed grind to a halt – literally – if the oil runs out tomorrow.
