Professor Sunanda Mahendra’s Chekhov Evening returned to the stage more than three decades after its original production and direction in 1991. The revived staging was held at Namel Weeramuni Punchi Theatre recently. I had the privilege of watching the 6.30 p.m. performance of ‘Chekhov Sandhyava’. This reflection is both an appreciation and an exploration of a remarkable theatrical journey that bridges past and present, underscoring the enduring relevance of Chekhov’s work and the lasting creative legacy of Professor Sunanda Mahendra.
