Since adoption of the republican constitution in 1972, Sri Lanka witnessed many constitutional crises and they rarely erupt overnight. They build slowly, fed by ambiguity, institutional mistrust, and the growing tendency to treat constitutional power as a weapon rather than a responsibility. The current controversy surrounding the appointment of the Auditor General is a reminder that even offices designed to stand above politics can be dragged into confrontation when restraint gives way to rivalry.
