Ceylon-turned-Sri Lanka marks its 78th Independence Day today. Independence for the Dominion of Ceylon was secured on February 4, 1948, as the 1947 Constitution came into force. Since then, February 4 has been observed annually to commemorate the country’s political freedom from British rule. Independence Day, by both history and symbolism, ought to be celebrated at Independence Square—and nowhere else.
