Independence is remembered as a single date fixed neatly in time. In Ceylon’s case, February 4, 1948 is celebrated as the moment the country stepped out from under British rule. Yet such a reading risks oversimplifying a complex historical process. Ceylonese independence was not some abrupt rupture but a gradual transformation shaped by centuries of colonial domination, social change, economic restructuring, and political negotiation.
