Seventy-eight years after Sri Lanka formally ended British colonial rule, Independence Day remains a marker of sovereignty—but not necessarily of consensus. For some, 4 February represents progress, political renewal, and the promise of stability. For others, it is a reminder of unfulfilled guarantees: equality, dignity, and genuine self-determination.
