Before 1978, women who could not conceive a child naturally had no option other than accepting their fate. Blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count, hormonal disorders, or unexplained infertility on either side are among the reasons that may prevent a natural pregnancy. While some indeed adopted a child to fill that vacuum, many opted to bear the pain of being childless alone.
