Thai Pongal is regarded as one of the most prominent Hindu festivals of the Tamil community. It falls on the first day of the Hindu–Tamil calendar month of Thai and is widely recognised as a Hindu Tamil festival in Sri Lanka. This auspicious day is also known as Ullavar Thirunal, where “Ullavar” means farmers and “Thirunal” signifies a festive or fortunate day.
