Education reforms are nothing new in Sri Lanka, as successive governments have attempted, successfully or unsuccessfully, to implement them periodically in the past. Nevertheless, it has always been challenging to incorporate sweeping reforms into the education sector because of stiff opposition from different quarters—political parties, trade unions, parents, university students, academics, and others.
