For the peoples of Palestine, Yemen, both Sudans, Somalia, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, Ukraine and, in parts of Myanmar and Democratic Congo, it is yet another day of intense war, even genocide and humanitarian crisis. The rest of humanity, who are not immediately fleeing shelling or genocidal or rapist soldiers, has the time (at least; if not conditions of comfort) to appreciate the dawning of a new calendar year.
