Professor Lalitha Dissanayake of the University of Peradeniya’s Department of Geology stated that dumping soil cleared from landslide sites near waterways poses a severe risk of it washing into rivers and reservoirs. She highlighted that this comes at a time when all rivers and reservoirs in the country are already facing reduced capacity due to significant silt deposits.
