WHEN Andres Bonifacio was condemned to death in 1897, the charge for which he was convicted was sedition and treason. The revolt against Spain broke out earlier, in August 1896. Before that, as early as 1892, he covertly organized the Katipunan (short for “Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan,” or Highest and Most Respected Society of the Country’s Children).
