In the turbulent transition from colonial rule to independence, Sri Lanka produced many politicians skilled in rhetoric and power-building. Far fewer combined intellectual depth, moral conviction and social reformist zeal. Among those rare figures was A. P. de Zoysa (1890–1968) — lawyer, anthropologist, lexicographer, translator, legislator and Buddhist reformer. His political journey did not deliver electoral triumphs, but it left an enduring legacy of principled public service and intellectual contribution.
