The Olympic rings returned to Tokyo Bay on December 1, 2020, after being removed in August for maintenance. Officials of the Tokyo metropolitan government said they wanted the rings to remind people that the Summer Games, postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, would definitely be held in 2021.
